India is set to significantly strengthen its defence capabilities. In a major development, the Central Government has given the green signal to procure 114 additional Rafale fighter jets for the Indian Air Force.

This massive decision marks one of the largest defence acquisitions in the country’s history. Officials believe the move will enhance India’s air superiority and strategic readiness.

Mega Defence Deal Worth ₹3.25 Lakh Crore

The massive deal, estimated at around ₹3.25 lakh crore, has received approval from a high-level panel led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

This acquisition is expected to become one of India’s biggest-ever military contracts. Moreover, it reflects the government’s focus on modernising the armed forces amid evolving security challenges.

Rafale Fleet to Expand Significantly

Currently, the Indian Air Force operates 36 Rafale fighter jets. With the addition of 114 new aircraft, the fleet strength will rise sharply.

In addition, the Indian Navy is separately procuring 26 Rafale-Marine variants for aircraft carrier operations. Once all these deliveries are completed, India will operate around 176 Rafale jets.

As a result, India could become one of the largest operators of Rafale fighter aircraft in the world.

Advanced P-8I Surveillance Aircraft for Navy

Alongside the Rafale deal, India is also strengthening its maritime surveillance. The government is purchasing six P-8I surveillance aircraft from the United States at an estimated cost of ₹27,000 crore.

These aircraft will enhance the Navy’s ability to monitor vast ocean territories. Therefore, India’s maritime security network will become more robust and responsive.

Strong Push for ‘Make in India’ in Defence

Importantly, the government has aligned this procurement with the ‘Make in India’ initiative. Authorities plan to ensure that manufacturing, maintenance, and repair work for these aircraft takes place within India.

This approach will create skilled jobs and develop domestic defence infrastructure. Furthermore, it positions India as a potential global hub for defence production and maintenance.

Official Signing Expected During Macron’s Visit

French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to visit India soon. During his visit, both nations are likely to formally sign the Rafale agreement.

The deal will not only include fighter jets but also advanced missiles, simulators, and spare parts. Consequently, the package aims to provide comprehensive operational capability rather than just aircraft procurement.

A Major Leap in India’s Defence Preparedness

Overall, the approval of 114 Rafale jets represents a significant milestone for India’s defence modernisation. By expanding its fighter fleet and strengthening naval surveillance, India is taking decisive steps to secure its airspace and maritime borders.

As the agreements move toward final signatures, the country’s strategic strength is set to grow even further.
