India’s dominant victory over South Africa in the opening T20I sent a strong warning to the cricketing world, and former Proteas fast-bowler Dale Steyn believes the hosts delivered a perfect masterclass on how to play on a sporting wicket.
The Men in Blue kicked off their five-match T20 series with a commanding 101-run win, showcasing both batting discipline and world-class bowling. Their performance also signalled clear intent ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Proteas Stumble on Home-like Conditions
Chasing 176, South Africa crashed to 74 all out — their lowest-ever T20I total. Steyn admitted the collapse shocked him, especially since the pitch offered the seam movement they usually thrive on.
“It’s not hard to understand how they batted, but it’s tough to accept,” Steyn said on JioStar. “These are conditions South Africa should know well. The message should have been simple — survive the first ten overs, assess, and then go deep. Instead, there was franticness without real aggression.”
India’s New-Ball Spells Set the Tone
Steyn credited India’s attack for dismantling South Africa early. “If India wanted to win, they had to make the new ball talk — and they did. Even the unlucky dismissals came from bowling in the right areas. They forced mistakes.”
He likened South Africa’s batting mindset to England’s recent misfires in Australia, pointing to inexperienced shot selection at crucial moments. “Brevis going after Bumrah at the end was a classic example. The game was gone, but you still need to pick your battles. If de Villiers couldn’t do it consistently, a youngster won’t. Wait for your moment.”
Suryakumar Yadav’s Leadership Impresses
Steyn also praised Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav for his calm, confident leadership style.
“When you’re backed by your team, you become the kind of captain players trust. You’re secure, you communicate openly, and you put the team first,” he said.
He highlighted how this trust helps Surya make tough tactical decisions without backlash: “If the captain tells someone, ‘You’re batting at six today, not three,’ the player understands because he knows Surya has supported him before. That’s top-tier leadership.”
A Statement Win for India
Steyn ended with high praise for the hosts:
“India played a perfect match. Hardik Pandya batted beautifully, and the bowlers were superb. They showed South Africa exactly how to play on a sporting wicket.”
With this emphatic win, India take an early lead and set the tone for what promises to be an intense series.
