The Indian Railways has announced a revision in passenger ticket fares across various categories, aiming to boost revenue by around ₹600 crore annually. According to an official statement, the revised fares will come into effect from December 26.
However, the Railways clarified that short-distance passengers will not be affected, as ticket prices for limited travel distances remain unchanged.
No Change for Short-Distance Travel
As per the latest fare structure, general ticket prices for journeys up to 215 kilometres will remain the same. This decision is expected to provide relief to daily commuters and short-distance travelers.
Meanwhile, passengers travelling beyond 215 kilometres will see a marginal increase of 1 paisa per kilometre in general class fares.
Fare Hike Across Other Train Categories
In addition, Express, Mail, and Non-AC train fares have been increased by 2 paise per kilometre. Notably, passengers travelling 500 kilometres in Non-AC trains will now have to pay an additional ₹10 on their tickets.
Railway officials described the hike as moderate, stating that the revision was carefully planned to minimize the burden on passengers while ensuring financial sustainability.
Rising Expenditure Prompts Fare Revision
Explaining the rationale behind the decision, Indian Railways noted that its operations have expanded significantly over the past decade. As a result, the department has had to increase manpower and operational capacity, leading to higher expenditure.
According to official data, the Railways spent ₹1.15 lakh crore on salaries and operational expenses during the 2024–25 financial year. Additionally, around ₹60,000 crore was allocated towards pension payments. Overall, total expenditure stood at ₹2.63 lakh crore.
Focus on Revenue Growth
Furthermore, the Railways stated that fare revision is part of a broader strategy to improve revenue generation. Along with passenger fare adjustments, the department is also focusing on enhancing freight transportation to strengthen its financial position.
Officials assured that the Railways will continue to balance passenger convenience with the need for sustainable growth.
