The Donald Trump administration has announced a new incentive to encourage illegal immigrants to leave the United States voluntarily. Under the scheme, undocumented migrants who exit the country by the end of this year will receive $3,000 (around ₹2.7 lakh).
The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the offer on December 22. In addition to cash assistance, migrants will get free flight tickets to their home countries. The government will also cancel civil fines linked to illegal stay.
To join the program, migrants must register through the “CBP Home” mobile application. After registration, the government will manage travel arrangements. DHS said the initiative offers a safe and dignified return option for families during the holiday season.
However, officials issued a clear warning to those who ignore the offer. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said enforcement agencies will take strict action. Authorities will identify, arrest, and deport migrants who refuse to leave voluntarily. She added that such individuals will face a permanent ban from re-entering the US.
DHS data shows that nearly 1.9 million undocumented migrants have left the US voluntarily since January. Officials said thousands have already used the CBP Home app. Earlier, the incentive stood at $1,000, but the administration increased it to $3,000 as part of a year-end push.
The move highlights the administration’s hardline approach on immigration. It combines financial incentives with strict enforcement to speed up voluntary departures.
