Several Indian citizens have returned safely to India from Iran, which continues to witness widespread protests and deteriorating security conditions. Following advisories issued by the Indian government, the evacuees arrived at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi on Friday night.
The returnees expressed relief after reaching home and thanked the central government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for ensuring their safe evacuation during a difficult situation. Many said the timely intervention by Indian authorities helped them escape worsening conditions in Iran.
Internet Shutdown and Safety Concerns
Iran has been facing intense unrest since late December due to a severe economic crisis and currency collapse. Protests have spread across several cities, leading to a breakdown in law and order. Adding to the difficulties, internet services were suspended, leaving foreign nationals, including Indians, unable to contact their families.
Families in India grew anxious as communication remained cut off for days. In response, the ministry of external affairs (MEA) and the Indian embassy in Tehran issued multiple advisories, urging Indian citizens to leave Iran at the earliest using available commercial flights.
Evacuees Share their Experience
One of the evacuees told the media that the situation on the ground was alarming. “The conditions were very bad. The Indian embassy kept guiding us at every step. With Modi ji’s leadership, anything is possible,” he said.
Another returnee described the hardships caused by the internet blackout. “We could not speak to our families for three days. Protesters blocked roads, and stepping outside felt unsafe,” she said.
Around 9,000 Indians Still in Iran
According to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, nearly 9,000 Indian nationals, including students, are currently residing in Iran. He assured that the government is closely monitoring the situation and will take all necessary steps to ensure the safety and welfare of Indian citizens.
Officials said evacuation through commercial flights is being facilitated, while the situation in Iran remains under constant review.
