The Income Tax Department has clarified recent messages that caused confusion among taxpayers. Many people received alerts saying the department had placed their tax refunds on hold. As a result, several taxpayers expressed concern on social media.
The department explained that it sent these messages under its NUDGE Campaign. The goal is to encourage taxpayers to review their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) and correct errors voluntarily.
Reason Behind the Alerts
Officials said some taxpayers claimed deductions and exemptions without eligibility. Therefore, the department sent advisory messages asking them to recheck their filings. The alerts mentioned refund mismatches and suggested submitting revised returns.
Several taxpayers said they received SMS alerts but no follow-up emails. However, when they checked the income tax portal, many found that the department had already credited their refunds to their bank accounts.
No Action Needed for Accurate Returns
The Income Tax Department clarified that taxpayers need not take any action if their claims are correct. The messages do not indicate enforcement or penalties. Instead, they serve as reminders for self-verification.
Taxpayers who find errors can file revised ITRs voluntarily. The department allows revisions until December 31, 2025.
Department Urges Calm
The department urged taxpayers not to panic. It advised them to rely only on official updates available on the income tax portal. Officials stressed that the campaign aims to improve compliance and transparency, not to harass honest taxpayers.
