Khammam: A massive eviction operation in the Khammam Collectorate area has sparked concern among residents. Authorities moved to clear 600 families living on 60 acres of land in Velugumatla, which was part of a land donation scheme.
Thousands of police personnel accompanied officials to the site. Using JCB machines, they began demolishing the small homes where these families have lived for over a decade.
The residents, many of whom have lived there for ten years, protested the move. They claimed the land was legally theirs and demanded official patta documents to secure their homes. Despite their pleas, officials continued the eviction, citing legal and administrative requirements.
The operation has raised concerns about the treatment of vulnerable communities. Local activists and social workers have urged the government to consider alternative solutions before displacing long-term residents. Many families fear losing not only their homes but also their livelihoods in the area.
The Khammam authorities have stated that the eviction is part of a land regularisation and development plan. They also assured that all legal procedures are being followed and that temporary shelters will be considered for those displaced.
This eviction drive highlights the ongoing tension between development projects and the rights of poor residents who have settled in donated lands for years.
