Police action during an election campaign in the Korutla town of Telangana triggered strong public anger after officers stopped a funeral procession on the main road. The incident took place on Saturday in Jagtial district during a campaign visit by Heavy Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy.
The minister visited Korutla to campaign for Congress candidates in several wards. As part of the programme, he addressed the public from a campaign vehicle near the Kalvagudda vegetable market. At the same time, the funeral procession of Kummanapalli Shashikala, a resident of Rajaka Wada, needed to pass through the same route.
Funeral delayed on busy road
Police personnel at the spot blocked the procession and asked the family to wait until the minister finished his speech. Local leaders and relatives requested immediate passage, but the police refused to allow the procession to move.
Under the harsh afternoon sun, family members stood on the road with the body for nearly 30 minutes. The delay caused severe distress and anger among the relatives. As frustration grew, some family members argued with the police, questioning the decision to stop a funeral for a political event.
After media representatives arrived at the location, police officials contacted senior officers. Soon after, they allowed the funeral procession to proceed.
The incident has drawn sharp criticism from Korutla residents. Many locals accused the police of showing insensitivity and excessive authority. People questioned how a funeral could be stopped for an election speech and demanded responsible action from officials. The episode has sparked widespread outrage across the town.
