The Kummer Mallanna Jatra in Nagarkurnool turned tragic, shocking people across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Opposition leaders criticised the Revanth Reddy government for failing to ensure safety and proper oversight. The incident claimed the life of a two-month-old infant, sparking widespread outrage.

Dispute at the Temple

Ganesh, his wife Monika, their two-month-old daughter, and relative Chandrakala attended the festival on the night of the incident. While entering the temple for darshan, a dispute erupted between the temple administrator, Srinivas Reddy, and Chandrakala over ticket charges. Srinivas Reddy demanded ₹100, and Chandrakala questioned why only their family had to pay.

The disagreement escalated into a physical scuffle between temple staff and Ganesh’s family. During the altercation, Monika and the baby fell. Doctors initially treated the infant at a local hospital, but she tragically passed away days later.

Family Files Complaint

The family immediately filed a complaint, prompting local police to register a suspicious death case. They launched an investigation without delay. Protesters blocked roads in Nager Kurnool for five hours, demanding justice. District authorities, including the Deputy Superintendent of Police, assured the public that they would investigate thoroughly, temporarily calming tensions.

NHRC and BC Commission Involvement

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) intervened after lawyer Vinod filed a formal complaint and submitted supporting evidence. Telangana BC Commission chairman Niranjan visited the site and confirmed the infant’s death. He emphasised that attacks on vulnerable communities must receive strict attention. Moreover, he instructed district officials to submit a detailed report and promised support for the bereaved family.

Political Leaders Respond

Political leaders also took notice. BRS Working President KTR visited Nager Kurnool to meet the affected family and assess the situation. Former MLA Marri Janardhan Reddy urged authorities to ensure justice. Critics highlighted the government’s failure to manage the festival. They accused the temple and revenue officials, along with local police, of negligence. Reports indicated that influential groups sold tickets without proper supervision, worsening the situation.

Administrative Failure and Public Outcry

The incident has become a symbol of administrative failure. Citizens demand strict action against those responsible for the infant’s death. The tragedy raises urgent questions about accountability during religious festivals and the protection of vulnerable attendees.

Although the government has promised action, public concern continues to grow. People hope authorities will take strict measures and prevent similar tragedies in the future. The family awaits justice, and the entire state watches closely to see how officials respond.
