LPG: In a move aimed at easing the daily struggles of migrant workers, the central government has announced a significant step to improve access to cooking gas across the country. Migrant labourers, who often relocate for work, have long faced difficulties in obtaining LPG connections due to documentation requirements and lack of permanent addresses.

Addressing this issue, the Ministry of Petroleum has decided to expand the availability of smaller LPG cylinders, making it easier for workers to access clean cooking fuel.

Supply of 5 Kg LPG Cylinders to Be Increased
The government has decided to immediately double the supply of 5 kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders. These smaller cylinders are particularly useful for migrant workers and low-income households, as they are portable, affordable, and easier to access compared to regular LPG connections.

The Centre has also urged state governments to ensure that these cylinders are widely available, especially in industrial areas and urban regions where migrant workers are concentrated.

Instructions Issued to States
To implement this decision effectively, Petroleum Secretary Neeraj Mittal has written to all state civil supplies departments. The communication highlights the need for better coordination with Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to strengthen the distribution network.

States have been asked to ensure that the cylinders are made accessible to the general public without unnecessary delays or restrictions.

No Address Proof Required
One of the key advantages of the 5 kg LPG cylinders is the simplified process for obtaining them. Unlike regular LPG connections, these cylinders do not require address proof.

Migrant workers can obtain them by simply presenting any valid identity card. This makes it highly convenient for those who frequently move between locations and cannot provide permanent residence documents.

Affordable and Accessible Option
These cylinders are also designed to be cost-effective. The refill cost is relatively lower, making them suitable for daily wage earners and economically weaker sections.

To further improve accessibility, the government is planning to make these cylinders available not only at gas agencies but also at petrol pumps and local distribution points.

Curbing Black Market Practices
By increasing the supply and improving accessibility, the government aims to reduce the chances of illegal LPG sales in the black market. When availability improves, dependence on unauthorized sources is expected to decline.

Ensuring Transparency
The involvement of civil supplies departments in monitoring the distribution process is expected to enhance transparency. This will help ensure that the intended beneficiaries, particularly migrant workers, receive the benefits without exploitation.

The decision to expand the supply of 5 kg LPG cylinders is a practical step towards supporting migrant workers across the -country. By simplifying access, reducing costs, and strengthening distribution, the government aims to address a long-standing issue faced by millions.

If implemented effectively, this initiative could significantly improve the quality of life for migrant labourers, making clean cooking fuel more accessible than ever before.
