The central government has approved a major infrastructure project to improve connectivity to Machilipatnam Port. As part of this move, it cleared the construction of a six-lane external port connectivity road at a cost of ₹574 crore. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the decision through a social media post.
With this approval, the project aims to create faster and smoother access to the port from national highways. As a result, cargo movement is expected to become quicker, while traffic pressure inside Machilipatnam town may reduce.
Faster Access from National Highways
Under the project, authorities will build the six-lane road from the Machilipatnam bypass on National Highway 216. It will connect the junction of National Highways 65 and 216 directly to the port. Because of this alignment, freight vehicles can reach the port without passing through busy city roads.
In addition, the project includes service roads on both sides to support local traffic. It also covers the construction of three flyovers and one overpass-cum-railway overbridge. These structures aim to improve safety and ensure uninterrupted movement.
Once completed, the new road is expected to strengthen Machilipatnam Port’s logistics capacity. At the same time, it may help improve trade flow and support economic activity in the region.
