The Madras High Court delivered a crucial verdict in Tamil Nadu by overturning the earlier single-bench order related to the film Jananayagan. In a significant move, the High Court cancelled the direction that asked the Central Board of Film Certification to issue a U/A certificate to the movie.
Earlier, a single bench had ruled in favour of the film and directed the censor board to grant a U/A certificate. However, the censor board challenged that order, arguing that the certification process must follow established guidelines. As a result, the matter reached the division bench of the Madras High Court for further review.
After hearing the arguments, the High Court set aside the single bench verdict. The court stated that certification decisions fall under the authority of the censor board and must follow legal procedures. Therefore, the earlier order could not stand.
Meanwhile, the makers of Jananayagan expressed concern over the latest development. Since the High Court cancelled the earlier relief, the film unit now plans to approach the Supreme Court. They hope the apex court will review the case and offer clarity on the certification issue.
This verdict has once again sparked discussion in film circles. Moreover, it highlights the ongoing debate over creative freedom and certification rules. Police or government agencies did not intervene further, and the legal process continues.
The outcome now depends on the Supreme Court’s decision.
