After a long pause of nearly 83 days, weddings and other auspicious ceremonies are set to resume as Magha Masam begins on February 18, marking the end of Shukra Moudyami. According to the Hindu calendar, scholars advise people to avoid performing major rituals during Moudyami days, as they are not considered spiritually favourable.
Last year, Shukra Moudyami began on November 26, bringing a temporary halt to marriages, housewarmings, and naming ceremonies. Now, with its conclusion on the 17th of this month, families across the state are preparing to conduct long-pending celebrations.
Auspicious Muhurthams Mark a Busy Wedding Season
With the arrival of Magha Masam, a series of auspicious muhurthams have opened up. Priests confirm that the coming six months will offer several favourable dates for weddings, housewarming ceremonies, engagements, business openings, and foundation stone events.
As a result, hundreds of marriages are expected to take place during this period. Event planners, decorators, gold merchants, caterers, and lighting service providers are also gearing up for a surge in demand. March, April, and June are likely to witness the highest number of weddings due to the availability of multiple good dates.
However, this busy phase will not last throughout the year. From August to October, Chaturmasam and Shunyamasam will once again pause auspicious ceremonies, as tradition discourages celebrations during that period.
Religious Significance Behind the Pause
Hindu scriptures state that on Devshayani Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu enters a state of yogic sleep. During this sacred period, devotees avoid conducting major ceremonies such as marriages, housewarmings, and tonsure rituals.
This phase continues for nearly four months. Later, on Devuthana Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu awakens from his divine rest. From the following day onward, auspicious functions resume across the country.
According to this calendar cycle, another round of favourable muhurthams will begin again in November and December.
For now, families are focusing on the upcoming wedding season, relieved that the long gap has ended. After nearly three months of waiting, celebration halls, temples, and homes are once again preparing to host joyous occasions filled with rituals, blessings, and festive cheer.
