Mahoba (Uttar Pradesh): A shocking case of inhuman neglect has come to light in Mahoba district, where an elderly man died after allegedly being held captive in his own house for five years. Meanwhile, his disabled daughter, who also suffered severe neglect, is now undergoing treatment.
Caretakers Allegedly Held Father and Daughter Captive
The victim, Om Prakash Singh Rathod (70), had retired as a senior clerk in the railways and lived a quiet life. After his wife’s death in 2016, he stayed with his 27-year-old disabled daughter, Rashmi. To care for them, family members appointed Ram Prakash Kushwaha and his wife Rama Devi as caretakers.
However, instead of providing care, the accused allegedly confined both father and daughter to a dark basement room. At the same time, they reportedly lived upstairs and prevented relatives from meeting them. Whenever family members visited, the caretakers allegedly claimed that Om Prakash did not wish to see anyone.
Victims Found in Extremely Weak Condition
When relatives learned about Om Prakash’s deteriorating health, they rushed to the house on Monday. To their horror, they found the elderly man in an extremely weak condition. Doctors later confirmed that Om Prakash had already died by the time he reached the hospital.
Meanwhile, Rashmi was found alive but severely malnourished. Relatives immediately shifted her for medical care. Family members stated that her condition reflected years of neglect and starvation.
Police Register Case, Investigation Underway
Following the incident, police registered a case and sent Om Prakash’s body for postmortem examination. Authorities have also begun a detailed investigation into the role of the caretakers.
Currently, Rashmi remains under the care of her relatives. Moreover, the victim’s family has demanded strict punishment for those responsible for the prolonged abuse and neglect.
This disturbing case has sparked outrage and raised serious questions about the safety of elderly and disabled individuals living alone, even within their own homes.
