The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has responded to the controversy surrounding Bangladeshi cricketer Mustafizur Rahman’s entry into the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season.
BCCI sources made it clear that they have not received any instructions from the Government of India to restrict Bangladeshi players from participating in the IPL. Officials stated that the board cannot take any action without formal government directions.
KKR Buys Mustafizur for ₹9.20 Crore
Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman was picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for ₹9.20 crore during the IPL 2026 mini auction. With this deal, he became the most expensive Bangladeshi player in IPL history.
However, the signing sparked criticism on social media and political platforms. The objections came amid reports of violence against religious minorities in Bangladesh, leading to calls for banning Bangladeshi players from the league.
BCCI Responds to the Controversy
A senior BCCI official told news agency IANS that the matter is beyond the board’s control.
“We have not received any government order to stop Bangladeshi players from playing in the IPL. Therefore, we cannot comment further,” the official said.
Political and Religious Reactions
Spiritual leader Devkinandan Thakur criticised KKR and its co-owner Shah Rukh Khan over the signing. He said the decision hurt the sentiments of followers of Sanatan Dharma, given the recent incidents in Bangladesh.
On the other hand, several political leaders and sports analysts argued that sports should remain separate from politics and diplomatic tensions.
Mustafizur’s IPL Experience
Mustafizur Rahman is not new to the IPL. He has previously played for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, and Delhi Capitals. His experience and proven performance continue to make him a valuable asset in the league.
As of now, the BCCI has maintained that Bangladeshi players remain eligible to play in the IPL unless the government issues specific instructions.
