Liquor sales in the Telugu states touched historic highs during the 2026 New Year celebrations, setting new revenue records in both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. In just the last three days of December, Telangana recorded liquor sales worth ₹1,000 crore, while Andhra Pradesh crossed ₹500 crore, according to official estimates.
In Telangana alone, 95 liquor bottles were sold every minute, while Andhra Pradesh recorded 93 bottles per minute. For the entire month of December, Telangana’s liquor revenue reached ₹5,051 crore. Out of this, Greater Hyderabad accounted for ₹2,020 crore, highlighting the massive urban demand.
Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh saw liquor sales of ₹543 crore in the final three days of December. Nationwide data placed Telangana at the top in liquor sales, with Andhra Pradesh securing the second position during the New Year period.
However, the celebrations also led to serious safety concerns. Videos of intoxicated youths creating disturbances on roads went viral from Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Gurgaon. In Hyderabad, pubs and New Year events witnessed heavy alcohol consumption, especially among young adults. Officials estimate that liquor worth nearly ₹700 crore was sold in Telangana on January 1 alone.
To prevent accidents, police intensified checks across the Hyderabad Tri-Commissionerate area. As a result, 2,731 drunk driving cases were registered, with the Hyderabad Commissionerate alone accounting for 1,198 cases. Most of those caught were between 21 and 30 years of age, officials revealed.
In addition, police closely monitored the use of narcotic substances. During special inspections by ‘Eagle’ teams, 89 individuals were tested. Five people, including four DJs, tested positive for marijuana. Authorities detained the accused and issued strict warnings to pub and resort owners against drug supply.
While New Year celebrations boosted state revenues, officials stressed the need for responsible celebrations and stricter enforcement to ensure public safety.
