The Vijayawada–Hyderabad NH-65 stretch is heading toward a major change. Every day, thousands of commuters struggle with heavy traffic inside the city. To solve this long-standing problem, the government has begun taking fast and decisive steps toward building a massive flyover. The proposed structure will run 5 kilometers from Gollapudi to the Kanakadurgamma Varadhi, offering a permanent solution to the congestion that frustrates motorists daily.

Once completed, the flyover will greet visitors entering Vijayawada. The proposal has already been included in the Detailed Project Report prepared by the consultancy firm. At present, vehicles coming from Hyderabad face severe traffic the moment they cross the Gollapudi check-post. By the time they reach Durga Temple, their patience is fully tested. Officials believe that this flyover will finally give commuters a smooth and stress-free journey.
According to planning guidelines, NH expansion requires a road width of 60 meters, but the available space ranges only between 40 and 50 meters. Land costs pose another challenge. Each square yard along this stretch now costs nearly one lakh rupees, and acquiring enough land for a 5-kilometer expansion would push costs up to ₹1,000 crore. Given these numbers, the flyover has emerged as the most practical and cost-effective solution. The project requires only ₹500 crore, making it both economical and highly beneficial.
This route also houses several commercial establishments, shops, and residential buildings. Large-scale land acquisition here would cause confusion and inconvenience. A flyover avoids that problem and handles the issue without disturbing existing structures. Officials are also planning the work in a way that keeps traffic moving on one side while construction continues on the other.
The DPR is currently under review by the Project Appraisal and Technical Scrutiny Committee. Once it receives approval, the remaining stages will progress quickly. If everything goes as expected, construction may begin by April 2026.
