Booking train tickets has become quick and convenient with multiple online platforms now available. Passengers can reserve tickets within minutes using their mobile phones, even a few hours before departure. However, those who book tickets online must follow certain rules to avoid trouble during the journey.
Railway officials have once again reminded passengers that carrying a valid identity proof is mandatory while travelling on an online train ticket. Failing to do so can result in fines or even removal from the train midway.
ID Proof Is Mandatory for Online Tickets
Passengers who purchase tickets at railway counters usually do not face ID verification issues. However, online ticket holders must carry a valid government-issued identity proof during travel.
Many passengers assume that showing the SMS or digital ticket on their phone is enough. That is not true. When the Ticket Examiner (TTE) asks for verification, passengers must show both the e-ticket details and a valid ID proof.
Accepted ID proofs include Aadhaar card, Voter ID, PAN card, Driving Licence, Passport, or any government-issued photo identity card with a signature.
What Happens If You Don’t Carry ID Proof?
If a passenger fails to show ID proof, railway rules treat the person as travelling without a valid ticket. In such cases, officials consider the e-ticket invalid.
The passenger must then pay the full fare from the boarding station to the destination. In addition, the TTE will impose a fine as per railway norms.
Fine Details for Rule Violation
According to railway regulations:
- AC class passengers must pay a fine of ₹400
- Sleeper class passengers must pay ₹200
Along with the fine, passengers must also pay the applicable ticket fare again.
Risk of Losing Seat or Being De-boarded
Passengers who fail to show ID proof may lose their allotted seat. Even after paying the fine, seat allotment is not guaranteed and depends on the TTE’s discretion.
In some cases, officials may ask the passenger to get down at the next station.
Railway Advice to Passengers
Railway authorities advise all online ticket holders to carry a valid ID proof throughout the journey. This simple step can help passengers avoid fines, seat loss, and unnecessary inconvenience.
