Indo-American television host and food expert Padma Lakshmi has expressed serious concern about the current social and political climate in the United States. She said the country is going through “dark days” and warned that the situation could worsen before any positive change appears.
Padma Lakshmi made these remarks during the launch event of her latest cookbook in New York. The event took place at the Asia Society, where she spoke openly about growing divisions and rising anti-immigrant sentiment in the country. According to her, although there is hope for better days, the present atmosphere remains deeply troubling.
She was promoting her new cookbook titled Padma’s All American: Tales, Travels, and Recipes from Taste the Nation and Beyond. While speaking about the book, she explained that food can help people understand each other’s cultures. She believes shared meals can reduce fear and bring communities closer together.
Padma Lakshmi pointed out that cities like New York thrive on diversity. People live next to others who speak different languages, eat different food, and follow different faiths. However, she noted that these differences often stop people from learning about one another. Through her writing, she hopes to encourage curiosity instead of division.
She also criticised past immigration policies linked to figures like Steve Bannon and Stephen Miller. According to her, the actions of agencies such as ICE created fear among immigrant communities. She described her book as a strong response to such policies. Through stories and recipes, she highlights Cambodian, Peruvian, Nigerian, and other immigrant communities across America.
Padma Lakshmi stressed that basic human needs remain the same everywhere. She said people want safety for their children, care for elders, and a stable home. These, she added, are not cultural values but universal human values.
In conclusion, Padma Lakshmi said her cookbook aims to act as a positive bridge in a time filled with anger and division. Despite the darkness she sees around her, she continues to believe that understanding and empathy can slowly bring light.
