In a sensational verdict, a Pakistan Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) has sentenced eight journalists and YouTubers to life imprisonment. The court convicted them on charges of “digital terrorism.” The case is linked to the violence that followed the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Verdict Announced in Absence of Accused
On Friday, Islamabad ATC Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra delivered the verdict. However, the trial took place in absentia because all the accused currently live abroad. As a result, none of them appeared before the court.
Each convict received two life sentences, along with 10 additional years of rigorous imprisonment. Moreover, the court imposed heavy financial penalties on all eight individuals.
Who Are the Convicted Journalists
Those sentenced include senior journalists Wajahat Saeed Khan, Sabir Shakir, Shaheen Sehbai, and Moeed Pirzada. Meanwhile, popular YouTubers Adil Raja and Haider Raza Mehdi also feature on the list. Former army officer Syed Akbar Hussain is among the convicted as well.
Charges Linked to Post-Arrest Violence
According to the prosecution, widespread violence erupted across Pakistan after Imran Khan’s arrest on May 9, 2023. During this period, the accused allegedly used online speeches and social media posts to provoke unrest.
Furthermore, prosecutors claimed the content encouraged attacks on government and military institutions. They argued that these actions created fear in society. Therefore, the court ruled that the acts qualify as digital terrorism.
Cases Filed in Islamabad
Authorities registered cases at Ramna and Abpara police stations in Islamabad. The charges include waging war against the state and criminal conspiracy.
High Court Review Pending
However, the judge clarified an important point. The verdict must receive confirmation from the Islamabad High Court. Until then, legal experts expect appeals and further scrutiny.
Meanwhile, the ruling has sparked debate over press freedom and online expression in Pakistan. Media rights groups are also likely to react strongly in the coming days.
