Fish lovers in the Godavari region were thrilled after a rare and massive Pandugappa fish was caught in the river near Kakinada. A giant Pandugappa (Barramundi/Pangasius) weighing 24 kg was netted at Dariyalathippa in the Yanam area, creating excitement among locals and traders alike.
Pulasa and Pandugappa fish, which appear in the Godavari only during specific seasons, enjoy legendary status among seafood lovers. People eagerly wait for these varieties due to their rich taste, nutritional value, and traditional belief in their medicinal benefits. Because of their rarity, these fish often fetch premium prices in the market.
According to local fishermen, such a large Pandugappa fish has not been caught in recent times. As soon as the news spread, buyers rushed to secure the prized catch. After intense competition, the fisherman sold the 24 kg Pandugappa fish for Rs. 16,000, surprising many at the local market.
Yanam Fisheries Department Assistant Director Dadala Gonteyya said Pandugappa fish meat is rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin B12. He added that the fish helps strengthen the heart and bones and is considered highly beneficial for overall health. Locals often say that if Pulasa is the king of Godavari fish, Pandugappa proudly takes the next place.
In the Godavari districts, Pandugappa is commonly prepared as a spicy curry or fried delicacy. After the Pulasa season ends, families often send Pandugappa curry to relatives living in other regions, states, and even abroad. The latest catch has once again highlighted the unique food culture and rich aquatic wealth of the Godavari river.
