Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan has underlined the critical role of mangrove forests in protecting the state’s long coastline from natural disasters. He said mangroves act as a natural shield against sea waves, cyclones, and coastal erosion. According to him, preserving existing mangrove forests while expanding new ones remains a key priority of the state government.

Focus on Coastal Security and Environmental Protection

Pawan Kalyan made these remarks while attending a two-day national-level workshop titled “Mangrove Forest Enhancement – Sustainable Income” in Vijayawada. The event was organized by the State Forest and Environment Department. Speaking as the chief guest, he described mangrove forests as a protective wall for Andhra Pradesh’s 1,052-kilometre-long coastline.

He also pointed out that regions such as the Godavari and Krishna delta areas face frequent cyclone threats. Therefore, he stressed the urgent need to expand mangrove cover in these vulnerable coastal belts.

700 Hectares Covered Under Mangrove Development

Highlighting ongoing efforts, the Deputy Chief Minister said the government has taken up mangrove forest development across 700 hectares of coastal land by 2025. He added that the state is implementing a three-phase green belt development plan along the coast. Through this initiative, the government aims to significantly reduce damage caused by natural calamities.

Mangroves to Support Sustainable Livelihoods

Beyond environmental protection, Pawan Kalyan emphasized the economic potential of mangrove forests. He said mangroves should also serve as a sustainable source of income for coastal communities. As part of this vision, the government is promoting eco-tourism, skill development, and local marketing initiatives.

Additionally, he revealed that forest nurseries are being developed to improve income opportunities for tribal groups and local residents. According to him, this integrated approach will ensure both environmental conservation and economic growth for coastal regions.
