The Government of India marked a significant cultural milestone today as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the year-long commemoration of 150 years of the national song ‘Vande Mataram’. The event at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi saw the release of a commemorative stamp and coin, and the launch of a dedicated portal to honour the song’s historic legacy.
Citizens from all walks of life gathered across public spaces around 9:50 am and sang the full version of Vande Mataram in a show of national unity. Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Vinai Saxena and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta were among dignitaries present at the launch event.
Historical significance of Vande Mataram
Written by Bankim Chandra Chatterji on November 7, 1875 (Akshaya Navami), the hymn ‘Vande Mataram’ was first published in the literary journal Bangadarshan as part of his novel Anandamath. Over the decades, the song became a rallying cry during India’s freedom movement, symbolising devotion to the Motherland and unity in diversity.
The national campaign runs from November 7, 2025, to November 7, 2026, marking the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram.
Activities planned include:
- Collective singing events in schools, colleges, and public spaces nationwide.
- Distribution of the song’s full version and related materials to engage youth and students.
- Special cultural, artistic and educational competitions linking the song’s legacy with modern India’s youth.
In addition, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will hold programmes at nearly 150 locations across India on November 7 to mark the anniversary.

The celebration of 150 Years of Vande Mataram comes at a time when there is renewed emphasis on national symbols and shared heritage. By placing the song at the heart of a year-long public engagement, the government seeks to reinforce the bonds of unity, highlight historical continuity and inspire the younger generation to connect with the values such as devotion, pride and collective identity embodied in the song.
