The Supreme Court will deliver its verdict today in the high-profile death case of actress Priyusha. The accused, Siddharth Reddy, initially received a five-year prison sentence from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Sessions Court. The Telangana High Court later reduced it to two years. Following this, Priyusha’s mother, Sarojini, approached the Supreme Court, asking for a harsher punishment. The court heard arguments from both sides and reserved its judgment last November. Today, the bench will announce the final verdict.
Public Outcry and CBI Investigation
Priyusha’s death in 2002 shocked the Telugu film industry and the public. Her mother raised doubts about the circumstances, prompting the government to order a CBI investigation. The agency claimed Siddharth Reddy and Priyusha attempted suicide because their families opposed their marriage. The case attracted massive attention and remained under public scrutiny for years.
Appeals from Both Sides
Siddharth Reddy challenged the High Court’s reduced sentence in the Supreme Court, while Priyusha’s mother sought an increased punishment. A bench of Justices Rajesh Bindal and Manmohan heard detailed arguments from the prosecution and defence before reserving the verdict. Public interest in the case remains high due to its long history and emotional impact.
The 2002 Incident
In 2002, Priyusha and Siddharth Reddy, both studying in Hyderabad, consumed insecticide on February 23. They were hospitalised, and Priyusha died the next day, while Siddharth survived. The CBI charged Siddharth with abetment to suicide. In 2004, the Sessions Court sentenced him to five years’ imprisonment.
High Court Reduction and Supreme Court Petition
Siddharth appealed to the High Court, which reduced his sentence to two years in 2011 and increased the fine to ₹50,000. Priyusha’s mother filed a petition in 2012 seeking an increase in the punishment. The CBI argued for full sentencing, claiming Siddharth abetted the suicide. The defence stated both consumed poison together, making abetment inapplicable. After hearing both sides, the Supreme Court reserved its judgment.
Anticipation Builds
The public eagerly awaits the Supreme Court’s decision today. Legal experts, fans, and supporters of Priyusha are following the case closely. The verdict will conclude one of the most talked-about cases in Telugu cinema history.
