Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, known for his controversial opinions, has once again sparked debate in the film industry. Taking to social media, Varma targeted several top directors from Tollywood and Bollywood while strongly praising the much-talked-about film Dhurandhar. His sharp remarks have quickly gone viral and triggered mixed reactions online.
Varma claimed that many big-budget filmmakers are afraid to even talk about Dhurandhar. According to him, this silence is not due to ego or indifference. Instead, he believes it stems from fear that they can never reach the film’s creative level. He criticised the growing trend in the industry where directors avoid appreciating a powerful film and choose silence instead.
Explaining his point in his trademark style, Varma used a striking analogy. He said that when people visit a house with a large, frightening dog, they may be told it will not bite. However, their attention remains fixed on the dog. Similarly, Varma remarked that Dhurandhar has become a “fear factor” in big film offices. Even if directors avoid mentioning it, the film dominates their thoughts, he added.
Varma further took a dig at filmmakers who rely heavily on grand sets, expensive VFX, item songs, and exaggerated hero elevation scenes. He stated that for such directors, Dhurandhar feels like a horror film. According to him, the movie reinforces the idea that cinema itself should be the hero, not just star-driven narratives.
Directed by Aditya Dhar, Dhurandhar is not just a commercial success, Varma said. He described it as one of the most discussed Indian films of the last 50 years. He praised its impact, storytelling strength, and the conversations it has generated across the country.
Varma’s comments have divided social media users. While some agree with his criticism and praise for Dhurandhar, others accuse him of deliberately provoking the industry once again. Regardless, his statements have ensured that both he and Dhurandhar remain firmly in the spotlight.
