Actor and social activist Renu Desai has strongly condemned the killing of street dogs, questioning the priorities of government systems and society. Speaking at a press meet, she asked why authorities react swiftly to isolated dog bite cases but remain silent on road accidents, murders, rapes, and daily loss of human lives.
Renu Desai, along with activist Rashmi, expressed deep anger over recent incidents where hundreds of street dogs were killed in the name of public safety. She questioned whether lives lost in road accidents and disease outbreaks matter any less.
“Are Only Some Lives Important?” Asks Renu Desai
Renu Desai pointed out that hundreds of people die every day in road accidents. Yet, she said, the system rarely shows urgency. She questioned why extreme steps are taken only when a dog bite occurs.
She also criticised a recent incident in Nizamabad district, where a village sarpanch allegedly ordered the killing of hundreds of street dogs. Calling the act inhuman, she said animals too have the right to live.
“Not just dogs, but cows, buffaloes, cats, and monkeys are all living beings,” she said. “Life does not belong only to humans.”
Poor Sanitation Behind Rising Street Dog Numbers
According to Renu Desai, poor sanitation is the real reason behind the increase in street dog populations. Garbage dumped on streets attracts animals, she explained. However, instead of fixing waste management, authorities blame dogs.
She questioned why governments fail to address core issues like cleanliness, waste disposal, and urban planning.
Personal Experience and Strong Warning
Sharing a personal incident, Renu Desai recalled suffering from dengue in 2019 due to mosquito bites. She said she almost lost her life but saw no serious mosquito control efforts at that time.
She criticised the hypocrisy of people who worship deities linked to dogs while supporting their killing. She warned that injustice always returns and said karma spares no one.
Despite expecting backlash and abuse on social media, Renu Desai said she would continue to speak. “Even if one person changes, my voice matters,” she stated.
Call for Shelters and Responsible Ownership
Activist Rashmi urged the government to set up proper shelters and basic facilities for street dogs. She also said owners of foreign dog breeds must follow strict responsibility and care standards.
Both speakers stressed that violence is not a solution. They demanded humane, long-term policies instead.
No Political Ambitions, Clarifies Renu Desai
Renu Desai clarified that she has no intention of entering politics. She also addressed a viral video from the press meet, explaining that she reacted only to one individual who shouted at her and attempted to attack her.
She requested the media and public not to drag her personal life into the issue. “Please speak about the problem, not my private life,” she appealed.
