The Rs 30,000 crore inheritance dispute involving late industrialist Sanjay Kapoor, former chairman of Sonacomstar, has taken a dramatic turn. His third wife, Priya Kapoor, has now moved the Supreme Court of India, intensifying a legal battle that has already drawn national attention.
Priya Kapoor has sought access to confidential documents and settlement agreements from Sanjay Kapoor’s 2016 divorce with actress Karisma Kapoor. In her petition, she stated that she wants clarity on the financial provisions Sanjay Kapoor made for his children, Samaira and Kiaan, during the divorce proceedings.
Sanjay Kapoor died in June last year after suffering a heart attack while playing polo in Britain. Soon after his death, a will surfaced, triggering a fierce dispute within the family. According to the document, Sanjay Kapoor allegedly transferred his entire estate to Priya Kapoor.
However, Karisma Kapoor’s children have strongly objected to the will. They have claimed that the document is forged and does not carry their father’s genuine signature. The children have also pointed out spelling errors in their names, arguing that such mistakes are unlikely from a well-educated businessman like Sanjay Kapoor.
The case, which began as a civil dispute, is now moving toward criminal proceedings. Samaira and Kiaan have urged the court to take criminal action against Priya Kapoor and punish her for alleged forgery. A detailed hearing is currently underway in the Delhi High Court.
Adding another layer to the dispute, Sanjay Kapoor’s mother, Rani Kapoor, has openly supported her grandchildren. She has questioned how her son could exclude both his mother and children from such a vast property.
Meanwhile, Priya Kapoor has denied all allegations. She told the court that she spent nearly Rs 96 lakh on the children’s lifestyle after Sanjay Kapoor’s death. Her legal team has argued that clerical errors alone do not prove forgery.
At present, the case is being heard simultaneously in the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court. With a Rs 30,000 crore empire at stake, the outcome will decide one of India’s most high-profile inheritance battles. The nation now watches closely as the courts move toward a crucial verdict.
