The Russia–Ukraine war has entered a dangerous new phase following a massive Russian strike on Ukraine. Late last night, Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone attack targeting western Ukraine, including the city of Lviv. Russian authorities said the strike came in retaliation for an alleged Ukrainian drone attack on President Vladimir Putin’s residence.
Russia Tests Oreshnik Hypersonic Missile
During the assault, Russia fired its advanced Oreshnik ballistic missile, marking only the second known use of this weapon in the war. According to the Russian Defence Ministry, the missile can travel at ten times the speed of sound, reaching speeds of nearly 13,000 km per hour.
Officials described the Oreshnik as an intermediate-range ballistic missile capable of carrying both nuclear and conventional warheads. Russia claimed the missile has the range to strike targets across Europe. It also stated that no existing defence systems can intercept it.
Massive Missile and Drone Assault
In total, Russia launched 36 missiles and 242 drones during the overnight attack. Ukraine’s Air Force said it successfully intercepted many drones and several missiles. However, some projectiles managed to hit their targets.
The strikes killed four civilians and injured 22 others, including a paramedic and rescue workers. Several residential buildings suffered heavy damage. Energy infrastructure facilities were also hit, raising concerns about power supply disruptions.
Ukraine Raises Alarm Over European Security
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister warned that the Oreshnik missile landed dangerously close to the NATO border. He described the attack as a serious threat to regional and European security. Kyiv urged its allies to respond strongly to what it called Russia’s escalating aggression.
War Enters a More Dangerous Phase
With the use of hypersonic missile technology and intensified drone warfare, analysts believe the conflict has reached a more volatile stage. The latest developments have increased fears of wider regional instability and further escalation in the ongoing war.
