The Konaseema District Collector, Mahesh Kumar, had a narrow escape on Tuesday during a trial run for the Sankranti boat races. He personally inspected the event arrangements ahead of the festival.
As part of the review, the Collector operated a kayak in a canal to assess safety measures and overall preparedness at the venue.
Kayak Capsizes During Trial Run
During the inspection, the kayak suddenly capsized, throwing the Collector into the water. The unexpected incident created brief tension among officials present at the site.
However, the Collector wore a life jacket, which kept him afloat and prevented panic.
Rescue Team Responds Swiftly
Rescue personnel and trained swimmers, already stationed at the venue, responded immediately. They reached the Collector within minutes and safely pulled him out of the canal.
Officials confirmed that Mahesh Kumar did not suffer any injuries. They credited the quick response and safety planning for preventing a serious mishap.
Authorities Review Safety Measures
After the incident, district authorities reviewed the safety arrangements in detail. Officials instructed departments to deploy additional rescue staff, increase supervision, and strengthen precautionary systems.
They also directed teams to ensure proper monitoring during practice sessions and the main event.

Authorities stressed that no compromise will be allowed on safety during the Sankranti boat races. They said all water sports activities will strictly follow safety guidelines.
