Bengaluru-based startup Sarvam AI, founded by IIT Madras alumni Pratyush Kumar and Vivek Raghavan, is making waves in the artificial intelligence sector. The company is now competing with global tech giants like Google and OpenAI with its innovative AI solutions.
Global Performance and Accuracy
Sarvam AI’s flagship tool, Sarvam Vision, recently achieved 84.3% accuracy in the ‘olmOCR-Bench’ tests for Optical Character Recognition (OCR). This performance surpasses international models, including Google Gemini 3 Pro and ChatGPT, marking a major milestone for a homegrown AI company.
Unlike most global AI models that focus on English, Sarvam AI emphasises Indian languages. Its system can efficiently scan and interpret complex tables and documents in 22 official Indian languages, including Telugu and Hindi, making it highly relevant for domestic users.
Core AI Tools Revolutionising Indian Tech
Sarvam AI currently offers three major products:
Sarvam Vision: A high-accuracy document and image recognition tool ideal for handling complex Indian language documents.
Bulbul v3: A text-to-voice model that delivers natural Indian accents faster and more cost-effectively than foreign alternatives.
OpenHathi: The company’s first Hindi Large Language Model (LLM), which reportedly offers better translation quality than GPT-4.
These tools collectively demonstrate Sarvam AI’s ability to meet the unique needs of Indian users while maintaining world-class performance.
Sovereign AI and Atmanirbhar Bharat
The Indian government has praised Sarvam AI as an example of Sovereign AI. By relying on local data and resources, the startup reduces dependency on foreign companies, ensuring data security for Indian citizens. The Union IT Ministry has highlighted this as a key achievement for Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).
Real-World Applications
Sarvam AI’s products are expected to transform multiple sectors. They could enhance efficiency in call centres, online education, audio news, and government helplines. Experts say the tools will make services more accessible to people across different languages and regions.
Sarvam AI’s success is a testament to Indian innovation, proving that local startups can rival global giants while creating technology tailored to domestic needs.
