Railway travel in India is set to become far more comfortable with the introduction of modern sleeping pods at major stations. Designed to offer airport-style facilities at affordable prices, these pods aim to help passengers relax during long waits or overnight journeys. After a successful rollout at the Charlapalli Railway Terminal, South Central Railway has now launched the facility at Guntur Railway Station.
The initiative targets passengers who arrive from distant locations or those who wait for hours between connecting trains. Instead of stepping out to search for hotels, travelers can now rest safely within the station premises. Railway officials say the move focuses on convenience, safety, and affordability, especially for common passengers.
At Charlapalli Terminal, the sleeping pod center features 32 single beds. Authorities have allocated 16 pods each for men and women to ensure privacy and comfort. Passengers can book a pod for just ₹200 for two hours. Moreover, the pricing remains budget-friendly for longer stays. A six-hour rest costs ₹400, while a 12-hour stay is priced at ₹800. Travelers who need a full day of rest can book a pod for ₹1,200.
These sleeping pods offer more than just a bed. Passengers get access to free high-speed Wi-Fi, round-the-clock hot water, clean and well-maintained washrooms, and secure lockers for luggage. In addition, facilities such as a snack bar and a travel desk enhance the overall experience.
Inspired by executive lounges at airports, the pods combine comfort with practicality. The concept was first introduced at Mumbai Railway Station, where it received an overwhelming response. Encouraged by its success, South Central Railway has begun expanding the service to key stations across its network.
