Mandhana creates history in India vs Sri Lanka Women’s T20I
Indian women’s cricket star Smriti Mandhana created history in the fourth T20I against Sri Lanka at Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday. With a stunning performance, the 29-year-old became the fastest woman to score 10,000 runs in international cricket, surpassing former India captain Mithali Raj.
Fastest woman to 10,000 international runs
Before the match, Mandhana needed just 27 runs to reach the landmark. She achieved the milestone with a single in the seventh over of the innings. Importantly, she reached 10,000 runs in 281 innings, breaking Mithali Raj’s previous record of 291 innings.
As a result, Mandhana became only the second Indian woman and the fourth player worldwide to cross 10,000 international runs, joining Mithali Raj, Suzie Bates, and Charlotte Edwards.
Dominant innings powers India to big win
Meanwhile, Mandhana delivered a match-winning knock. She scored 80 runs off 48 balls, hitting 11 fours and three sixes. Alongside her, Shafali Verma played an equally aggressive innings, scoring 79 runs.
Together, Mandhana and Shafali stitched a record 162-run opening partnership, the highest partnership for any wicket for India in women’s T20Is. Consequently, India registered a dominant victory over Sri Lanka.
A golden year for Smriti Mandhana
Notably, 2025 has been a remarkable year for Mandhana. She emerged as the highest run-scorer in ODIs, played a crucial role in India’s World Cup triumph, and set the record for the most runs by an Indian woman in a single World Cup edition.
Moreover, she became the first Indian woman to score centuries in all three formats—Tests, ODIs, and T20Is.
Series firmly in India’s control
With this win, India extended its lead to 4–0 in the T20I series against Sri Lanka. Given her current form, Mandhana now looks set to challenge Mithali Raj’s all-time run record of 10,868 in the near future.
