Indian cricket star Rohit Sharma has made a candid revelation about his future, admitting that he seriously considered retirement after India’s heartbreaking loss in the 2023 ODI World Cup final. The defeat against Australia left him deeply disappointed and emotionally drained, Rohit said.
Under Rohit’s captaincy, Team India dominated the tournament, winning all nine league matches with authority. However, the unexpected loss in the final shattered his long-cherished dream of lifting the World Cup trophy. Rohit revealed that the pain of that defeat stayed with him for nearly two months.
“I had only one goal — to win the World Cup. When that dream slipped away, it broke me,” Rohit admitted. For a brief period, he even thought about stepping away from international cricket.
Turning Point: Focus Shifts to T20 World Cup 2024
However, Rohit soon gathered himself and redirected his focus toward the 2024 T20 World Cup. Realising that another major challenge lay ahead, he decided not to give up. His determination paid off as India went on to win the T20 World Cup under his leadership.
Following the triumph, Rohit announced his retirement from T20 internationals, bringing an end to a glorious chapter in the shortest format.
Continued Success and Future Goals
India’s success did not stop there. Within eight months of the T20 World Cup win, Rohit led the team to yet another ICC title. Team India defeated New Zealand in the 2025 Champions Trophy final to lift the trophy, further cementing Rohit’s legacy as a successful captain.
Currently, Rohit Sharma continues to play only in the ODI format. With his eyes firmly set on the 2027 ODI World Cup, he has shifted his focus toward fitness and consistent batting performances.
Strong Domestic Comeback
Recently, Rohit returned to domestic cricket and made an immediate impact. Representing Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, he smashed a century in his very first match, proving that his hunger and class remain intact.
From contemplating retirement to leading India to multiple ICC titles, Rohit Sharma’s journey reflects resilience, belief, and the mindset of a true champion.
