Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh badminton player Tamiri Surya Charishma created history by winning the women’s singles title at the 87th Yonex Sunrise Senior National Badminton Championship. As a result, Andhra Pradesh secured its first-ever national gold medal in women’s singles badminton.
Reacting to the achievement, AP IT and Education Minister Nara Lokesh congratulated Surya Charishma. He said he felt extremely proud of her success. Moreover, he described the victory as a historic moment for sports in the state.

First National Gold for AP Women
According to Minister Lokesh, this gold medal marks a major milestone for Andhra Pradesh badminton. In addition, he highlighted that the AP women’s team also won silver for the first time in the same tournament. Therefore, he called the results a strong example of women’s determination and teamwork.
Furthermore, Lokesh said Andhra girls are inspiring the next generation by achieving success at the national level. He added that such victories will encourage more young athletes to pursue sports professionally.
Thrilling Women’s Singles Final
Meanwhile, the championship concluded on Sunday in Vijayawada. In the women’s singles final, 19-year-old Surya Charishma produced a remarkable comeback. She lost the first game 17-21 against Tanvi Patri.
However, she quickly regained control of the match. Backed by strong home support, she won the next two games 21-12 and 21-14. Consequently, she clinched the national title in style.
Men’s Singles and Other Winners
Similarly, the men’s singles final delivered high drama. Rithvik Sanjeevi defeated Bharat Raghav 21-16, 22-20 to lift the title.
In other events, Shikha Gautam and Ashwini Bhatt won the women’s doubles crown. At the same time, Hariharan and Ruban Kumar claimed the men’s doubles title. Meanwhile, Satwik Reddy and Radhika Sharma emerged champions in mixed doubles.
Big Boost for AP Sports
Overall, the tournament ended on a positive note for Andhra Pradesh. Most importantly, Surya Charishma’s victory has given a major boost to badminton and women’s sports in the state.
