Violence against Hindus in Bangladesh escalated sharply on Monday, as three brutal crimes unfolded within hours. A widow faced gang rape in the morning, a journalist was shot dead in the evening, and a businessman was stabbed to death at night. These incidents have spread fear among minority families, who say attacks are becoming frequent and unchecked.
Trader Killed in Late-Night Attack
The final incident occurred around 10 pm in Brahmandi, under the Narsingdi district headquarters. Sharath Chakraborty Mani, a Hindu grocery shop owner, was working at his shop when assailants arrived. They attacked him with knives and fled the scene.
Local residents rushed Mani to a hospital, but doctors declared him dead. Mani had earlier worked in South Korea and later returned home. He built a house and supported his family through his small business. His murder has shocked the local community.
Widow Assaulted in Morning Crime
Earlier that morning, two youths gang-raped a 40-year-old Hindu widow in Kaliganj. They tied her to a tree, assaulted her, and cut her hair before escaping. The crime triggered outrage and renewed concerns about the safety of Hindu women.
Journalist Shot Dead in Jashore
In the evening, assailants killed journalist Rana Pratap in Kapalia Bazaar of Jashore district. He edited a local daily and also ran an ice factory nearby. Attackers shot him near his workplace, killing him on the spot. The murder raised serious concerns over press safety.
Fear Grips Minority Communities
With three violent crimes in a single day, fear now grips Hindu families across several districts. Community members say they live under constant threat. Rights groups have urged authorities to act swiftly, arrest the culprits, and ensure protection for minorities.
