Trump Unveils ‘Golden Fleet’ Warship Plan
Washington:
Former US President Donald Trump has announced plans to build a new class of large warships under a project he calls the “Golden Fleet.” He said the move aims to rebuild US shipbuilding power and strengthen naval deterrence.
Two Mega Warships to Lead the Project
Trump said the US Navy will begin building two massive warships immediately. He made the announcement at a press conference at Mar-a-Lago. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Navy Secretary John Phelan stood beside him.
He described the ships as the biggest and most powerful surface warships ever built by the United States. Trump said they would exceed the strength of the historic Iowa-class battleships.
Advanced Weapons and Technology
According to Trump, the new ships will carry advanced missile systems and hypersonic weapons. They will also use modern targeting systems and laser technology. He added that the ships can launch nuclear-capable cruise missiles.
“These will be among the most lethal warships in the world,” Trump said.
Fleet Expansion Plans
Trump said construction will start almost immediately. The first phase will take about two and a half years. While the Navy will begin with two ships, it plans to expand the fleet to 20 or 25 vessels over time.
Each ship will weigh between 30,000 and 40,000 tonnes. US shipyards will handle all construction work.
Boost to Jobs and Manufacturing
Trump linked the project to job creation and industrial growth. He urged defence companies to invest profits in factories and equipment. He also said companies should avoid stock buybacks.
“We want faster production and stronger shipyards,” he said.
Officials Stress Deterrence, Not Conflict
Defence Secretary Hegseth called the plan a long-term shift in US defence policy. Navy Secretary Phelan said the ships will act as command centers for naval forces, drones, and other systems.
Secretary of State Rubio said the effort supports global security and free navigation. Trump denied that the project targets any country. He said the goal is deterrence through strength.
Background and Strategic Context
The announcement comes as concerns grow over aging US warships and China’s fast-expanding navy. The US Navy has not built a new battleship since the mid-1990s. Instead, it has relied on aircraft carriers, submarines, and smaller combat ships.
