Dollar Sales Halted From Sunday Afternoon
The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) temporarily closed the Srivari gold and silver dollar counter from Friday afternoon. The counter operates under TTD supervision and sells devotional dollars bearing the image of Lord Venkateswara.
TTD runs this outlet at the Union Bank of India premises. The Peshkar’s office closely monitors its operations. As a result of the closure, devotees cannot purchase gold dollars at present.
Rising Gold Prices Trigger Review
Gold prices have risen steadily over the past few months. However, TTD has not revised the dollar prices at the same pace. Meanwhile, market rates continue to fluctuate sharply on a daily basis.
At Tirumala, TTD revises dollar prices only once a week, usually on Tuesday evenings. Because of this gap, TTD has faced financial losses. Therefore, officials decided to temporarily stop sales and review the pricing system.
Gold Dollars Currently Unavailable
The counter usually sells gold dollars weighing 5 grams and 10 grams. At present, these gold dollars are not available for sale. Only silver dollars remain in stock at the outlet.
Devotees visiting Tirumala have noticed the change. As a result, many are waiting for the revised policy before making purchases.
Plan to Introduce Daily Price Revision
TTD is now considering a new pricing method. Under this plan, the trust aims to announce prices daily based on the Tirupati bullion market. This move would help align devotional product prices with real-time market trends.
Officials are working to finalise this system quickly. Therefore, the counter may reopen once the new pricing structure takes effect.
New Purchase Rules Likely Soon
TTD also plans to introduce stricter purchase guidelines. Only devotees holding a valid darshan ticket may buy gold or silver dollars. In addition, each person will be allowed to purchase only one dollar.
For purchases exceeding ₹50,000, buyers must provide their PAN card number on the bill. Meanwhile, officials are preparing to implement these rules within the next two days.
Devotee Convenience and Transparency in Focus
TTD aims to protect its revenue while ensuring fairness and transparency for devotees. By updating prices daily and regulating sales, the trust hopes to avoid losses and prevent misuse.
Overall, the temporary closure marks an important step toward reforming the devotional merchandise system at Tirumala.
