The Central government has officially announced the schedule for the Union Budget 2026–27. The budget session of Parliament will begin on January 31, while Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget on February 1. Once again, she is set to create history by presenting the budget for a record number of times.
Since 2017, the Union Budget has followed the tradition of being presented on February 1. This year, the government has decided to continue the same practice even though February 1 falls on a Sunday. As a result, preparations have entered the final stage, and discussions have intensified across the country.
Budget Session to Begin on January 31
The budget session will start with President Draupadi Murmu addressing a joint sitting of both Houses on January 31. As per tradition, the President’s address will outline the government’s achievements, ongoing welfare schemes, and future policy priorities. After the address, Parliament will adjourn for the day.
On February 1 at 11 am, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will deliver her budget speech in Parliament. Expectations are high, especially from the middle class, salaried employees, and the business community.
Key Bills Likely in Budget Session
Reports suggest that the One Nation, One Election Bill may be introduced during this budget session. In addition, the government may table a bill proposing action against chief ministers and ministers who remain in jail for over 30 days.
Meanwhile, economists expect the budget to focus on inflation control, global economic challenges, and growth-oriented reforms. Industry leaders anticipate policy measures that support investment and job creation.
Income Tax Changes in Focus
Income tax relief remains a major talking point ahead of the budget. With the new Income Tax Act set to come into force from April 1, taxpayers are keenly watching for changes in tax slabs and exemptions. Therefore, this year’s budget is expected to play a crucial role in shaping financial planning for millions of Indians.
