US forces seized a Venezuelan oil tanker in the North Atlantic after tracking it for several days. The operation ended a prolonged pursuit of the vessel, which authorities accused of violating American sanctions.
The tanker attempted to evade interception while sailing toward Venezuela. However, US military teams continued monitoring its movement across the Atlantic. After sustained surveillance, they boarded the ship and took control of it in international waters.
The United States imposed sanctions on the tanker in 2024. Officials alleged that the vessel smuggled oil for a company linked to the Lebanese Hezbollah organisation. Authorities believe the ship played a role in bypassing international sanctions.
Last month, the US Coast Guard tried to seize the tanker during its journey toward Venezuela. The ship escaped at that time and continued sailing. Since then, US forces increased tracking efforts to stop it from reaching its destination.
After days of pursuit, American personnel intercepted the tanker while it drifted in the North Atlantic. Officials confirmed that the boarding operation took place safely and followed legal procedures under sanctions enforcement laws.
The seizure reflects Washington’s tougher stance on enforcing maritime sanctions. It also highlights stronger action against vessels involved in illegal oil transport through international waters.
US authorities have taken the tanker into custody. Officials are now preparing further legal steps to decide the fate of the vessel and its cargo.
