Support for small vendors Vali and Javed has grown steadily across Andhra Pradesh after an alleged incident at the Medaram fair triggered widespread debate. The two young businessmen were selling “Kova buns” at the famous tribal festival when they reportedly faced humiliation. However, what followed surprised many. Leaders from different communities and political parties stepped forward to assure them of protection and dignity.
The incident took place during the renowned Medaram Jatara, one of Asia’s largest tribal gatherings. Vali and Javed, who run a small food stall, said they experienced disrespect while conducting their business. Soon after the issue surfaced, support began pouring in from across Andhra Pradesh. Not only members of the Muslim community but also prominent political leaders extended solidarity.
Among those who publicly assured support were Andhra Pradesh Minister Nara Lokesh, Jana Sena MLC Nagababu, and Urdu Academy Chairman Mohammed Farooq. They emphasised that every citizen has the constitutional right to earn a livelihood without discrimination.
On Wednesday evening, Vali and Javed met Andhra Pradesh Mines Minister Kollu Ravindra. During the meeting, the minister asked them to explain what had happened at the fair. The two vendors described the humiliation they allegedly faced. Listening to their account, the minister expressed concern and assured them that the government would stand firmly with their family.
In a symbolic gesture, Vali presented the minister with the Kova bun he had prepared. Kollu Ravindra tasted it and praised its flavour, calling it “excellent.” The gesture reflected solidarity and respect for small entrepreneurs.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister stated that India’s Constitution allows every citizen to live and work beyond caste and religious boundaries. Moreover, he stressed that the right to do business and earn a livelihood belongs to everyone. He added that incidents of humiliation at sacred gatherings like Medaram disturb society at large and should never occur.
Finally, the minister extended immediate financial assistance to Vali’s family. The episode has since sparked a larger conversation about tolerance, constitutional rights, and the need to protect small traders at public events.
