Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay faced a legal setback after the Madras High Court dismissed his petition challenging an income tax penalty. The court refused to interfere with the notice issued by the Income Tax Department and upheld the penalty imposed on him.
The Income Tax Department earlier served Vijay a notice for failing to submit the required income details. Officials stated that he did not file proper tax calculations within the prescribed time. As a result, the department imposed a penalty of ₹1.5 crore for non-compliance with tax filing rules.
Challenging the notice, Vijay approached the Madras High Court and sought to quash the penalty. His counsel argued that the penalty was excessive and requested relief from the court. However, after hearing both sides, the court rejected the plea and ruled in favour of the Income Tax Department.
The court observed that taxpayers must follow statutory requirements and submit income details on time. Since the department followed due process before issuing the penalty, the court found no valid grounds to cancel the notice.
With the High Court dismissing his petition, legal circles say Vijay may now approach the Supreme Court for further relief. Meanwhile, the Income Tax Department’s action has sparked discussion in political and legal circles, as Vijay remains an active figure in Tamil Nadu politics.
The case adds to the growing scrutiny of financial compliance involving public figures.
