A shocking incident came to light in Kukatpally, Hyderabad, where a family allegedly kept the body of a 46-year-old woman inside their apartment for four days, claiming they were performing prayers before conducting the funeral. The incident created panic among residents and eventually required police intervention.
Family Background and Incident Details
The family, originally from Eluru in Andhra Pradesh, had been living in a rented apartment in Ramakrishna Nagar, Kukatpally. The household includes the wife of a deceased Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), her two daughters, and a son.
The younger daughter, Sailaja (46), had reportedly been suffering from health complications. She passed away at a local hospital on February 13, 2026. After her death, the family brought her body back to their apartment instead of proceeding with immediate funeral arrangements.
They placed the body inside a freezer box and locked themselves inside the flat.
Neighbours Grow Suspicious
However, days passed without any funeral rites being performed. Residents of the apartment complex began to grow suspicious as the family continued their daily routines. They occasionally stepped out for errands but avoided conversations about the funeral.
When neighbours questioned the delay, the family allegedly reacted aggressively. They reportedly told residents that they were conducting special prayers and would perform the last rites according to their own wishes.
Foul Smell Triggers Police Complaint
As time went on, a foul smell began emanating from the apartment, alarming nearby residents. Concerned about hygiene and safety, neighbours alerted the Kukatpally police on Monday.
When officers arrived at the scene, the family initially refused to open the door. They reportedly argued with the police and resisted intervention.
The situation escalated until police warned that the body would be handed over to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) for final rites if the family did not cooperate.
Police Intervention Resolves the Issue
Following the warning, the family eventually agreed to comply. Authorities ensured that the body was removed from the apartment.
Later, the family decided to transport Sailaja’s body to their hometown in Eluru to perform the funeral rites.
Residents Speak Out
Neighbours revealed that Sailaja had been struggling with mental health issues for some time. They also mentioned that the family lived a largely secluded life and rarely interacted with other residents in the building.
The incident has raised concerns about mental health awareness and the importance of timely funeral procedures in residential communities.
