Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised the importance of mental health as a vital part of overall well-being on World Mental Health Day 2025. The day, observed every year on October 10, promotes global awareness and encourages open conversations on emotional and psychological wellness.
In a post on X, PM Modi said, “World Mental Health Day serves as a reminder that mental health is a fundamental part of our overall well-being.”
He urged citizens to show compassion toward those struggling with anxiety, stress, or depression, and to bring discussions about mental health into everyday life. “Let’s work collectively to create environments where mental health conversations become mainstream,” he said, appreciating those helping others heal and find happiness.
Union Health Minister stresses access to mental health services
Union Health Minister JP Nadda echoed the message, calling for collective efforts to prioritise emotional and mental wellness. Highlighting the WHO’s 2025 theme, “Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies”, he emphasised the need for timely mental health support during humanitarian crises. “Let us build a society that promotes care, understanding, and access to mental health services for all,” Nadda said.
Ayush Ministry promotes mindful living and holistic wellness
The Ministry of Ayush also marked the day by promoting mindfulness, yoga, and Ayurveda as tools for daily mental wellness. It encouraged citizens to adopt disciplined routines, practice meditation, and embrace balanced nutrition for long-term emotional stability. “Embrace mindful living and disciplined routines for a healthier mind and a healthier life,” the Ministry said.
Tele-MANAS reaches 23 lakh calls nationwide
According to the National Mental Health Survey (2016), about 13.2% of Indians experience a diagnosable mental health condition during their lifetime. To bridge the gap, the government launched Tele-MANAS, a 24/7 counselling helpline offering multilingual mental health support.
Since its launch in 2022, the platform has received over 23 lakh calls, making it one of India’s largest digital mental health outreach programmes. In addition, the District Mental Health Programme operates across 700+ districts, offering clinical and community-level services through psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers.
Rajya Sabha MP Sudha Murty urged women to prioritise emotional wellness and reach out when they need support. “Our well-being is not a luxury; it’s the foundation of a happy home,” she said. “There is immense courage in asking for support—let today be the day we take that first step.”
Global focus: Anxiety and depression still lead worldwide
The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that over 100 million people globally live with a mental health disorder. Women are disproportionately affected, with anxiety and depressive disorders remaining the most common conditions.
As leaders, health experts, and citizens unite to mark World Mental Health Day 2025, the message is clear — mental health is not a luxury; it is essential for life.
