In a recent BBC interview, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a startling claim that Russian President Vladimir Putin has unofficially begun World War III. Zelensky cautioned that if Putin is not stopped now, it is impossible to predict how much more territory Russia will try to occupy. He emphasised that Ukraine’s resistance is currently preventing the conflict from escalating globally.
Rejection of Russia’s Peace Demands
Zelensky strongly rejected Russia’s peace proposals, which require Ukraine to cede territories such as Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia. He argued that giving up land would betray millions of residents and compromise national security. According to him, a temporary pause in the war would allow Russia to regroup and launch a more powerful attack within two years.
Call for Security Guarantees
The Ukrainian president stressed the need for strong security guarantees from the United States. He specifically requested that Congress provide these guarantees, not just the executive branch. Zelensky noted that while presidents may change, permanent systems ensure lasting security.
Military Requirements
Zelensky urged international allies to permit the production and supply of advanced weaponry, such as Patriot missiles. He highlighted that strengthening Ukraine’s air defence is critical to protecting its territory and population.
Domestic Issues and Elections
On domestic matters, Zelensky said future elections can only occur under robust security arrangements. He added that he has not yet decided whether he will run for office again. Most importantly, Zelensky stressed that any decisions regarding Ukraine’s territory must be made by the Ukrainian people through a referendum.
