A shocking incident in Bangladesh has sparked nationwide outrage after a mob brutally killed a Hindu youth over alleged blasphemy. The victim, Deepu Chandra Das, died in the Bhaluka area of Mymensingh district.
Police said Deepu worked at a local garment factory and lived in the same locality. On Thursday night, rumours spread that he made offensive remarks about Prophet Muhammad. Soon after, a large mob gathered near his residence.
Without any inquiry or legal action, the mob attacked him with sticks and rods. They beat him to death in public. Later, the attackers tied his body to a tree and set it on fire. Videos of the incident quickly spread on social media, triggering widespread condemnation.
Bhaluka police confirmed the victim’s identity and registered a case. Officials said they launched an investigation and started efforts to identify the attackers.
Political Reactions in India
The incident drew sharp reactions from India, especially from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP’s West Bengal unit strongly condemned the killing and called it an act of religious extremism.
BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya reacted on social media platform X. He said extremists murdered Deepu in a brutal manner. He warned that minorities remain unsafe when governments fail to control radical forces. Malviya also accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of appeasement politics.
Rising Violence Across Bangladesh
Bangladesh continues to face unrest following the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi. Protests erupted in several regions after his death. In many places, demonstrations turned violent.
Meanwhile, protesters gathered near the Indian Deputy High Commission in Chittagong. They raised anti-India slogans, further escalating tensions.
Rights groups have demanded strict action against those responsible. They also called for stronger protection for minorities. Authorities have not yet announced any arrests.
