US authorities have arrested 30 Indian nationals who were illegally residing in the United States and operating heavy semi-trucks using Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs). The arrests were made during inspections conducted in California’s El Centro Sector, according to the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

Between November 23 and December 12, officials carried out checks along interstate highways and immigration checkpoints. During this period, authorities detained a total of 42 undocumented immigrants. Among them, 30 were Indians, while the remaining individuals were from El Salvador, China, Haiti, Mexico, Russia, and other countries. Officials revealed that states such as California, Florida, New York, and New Jersey had issued CDLs to these individuals.

In a major crackdown, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Homeland Security launched a special operation named “Operation Highway Sentinel” on December 10 and 11. The operation specifically targeted trucking companies in California. As part of this drive, authorities arrested an additional 45 undocumented immigrants involved in commercial trucking activities.

Officials said the crackdown followed a series of serious road accidents caused by illegally residing drivers operating heavy vehicles. Some of these accidents resulted in the deaths of young people and children, while several others suffered severe injuries. Authorities noted that such incidents raised serious concerns over public safety.

El Centro Sector Acting Chief Joseph Remenar stressed that undocumented individuals should never be allowed to operate semi-trucks. “Public safety is our top priority. Drivers who are not legally authorized pose a serious risk on highways,” he said.

US officials indicated that strict action will continue against illegal immigrants involved in commercial driving, as authorities aim to prevent further accidents and ensure safety on American roads.
