As Sankranti approaches, villages across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana fill with festive energy. Meanwhile, people working in cities return to their hometowns to celebrate the harvest festival. Along with rangavallu, gobbemmalu, and gangireddu performances, Bhogi Mantalu remains the most symbolic tradition of the festival.

Bhogi Panduga marks the first day of the three-day Sankranti celebrations. On this day, families light bonfires early in the morning and burn old household items. However, many people still do not clearly understand the real purpose of this ritual or the right materials to use.

Why Do People Light Bhogi Mantalu?

Bhogi Mantalu represents more than a cultural practice. In fact, it reflects spiritual, environmental, and health-related values. Elders believe that Bhogi teaches people to let go of the past and welcome new beginnings. By burning old items, families symbolically remove negativity, laziness, and unwanted habits from the previous year.

Moreover, Sankranti stands as the first major festival of the year. Therefore, Bhogi Mantalu symbolizes fresh hopes, a new harvest, and positive change.

Why Is Cow Dung Used in Bhogi Mantalu?

Cow dung plays an important role in Bhogi bonfires. In Indian tradition, people worship the cow as sacred, and they regularly use cow dung in yagnas and rituals. Similarly, many consider Bhogi Mantalu a form of yagna.

Scientifically, cow dung burns with fewer harmful emissions. As a result, the smoke repels mosquitoes and insects while helping purify the air. Additionally, the ash left behind improves soil fertility and supports agricultural activity.

What Items Should Be Burned in the Bonfire?

Traditionally, families burn only natural and biodegradable materials during Bhogi Mantalu. These include:

  • old wooden utensils

  • worn-out clothes

  • damaged mats and baskets

  • dried leaves and coconut husks

Since these materials decompose naturally, they align with the eco-friendly purpose of the ritual.

What Should Not Be Burned?

At the same time, elders and environmental experts strongly advise people to avoid burning:

  • plastic and rubber

  • chemical-based items

  • painted or polished wood

These materials release toxic gases and harm the environment. Therefore, people must remember that Bhogi Mantalu aims to purify nature, not pollute it.

Why Do People Bathe With Boiled Water on Bhogi Day?

Another key Bhogi tradition involves bathing with water heated using the bonfire. Elders believe that the natural gases released from burning cow dung and firewood give the water mild antiseptic properties.

Furthermore, hot water baths during winter help protect against seasonal illnesses. As a result, this practice supports both physical cleanliness and mental freshness.

A Tradition That Teaches Renewal

Bhogi Mantalu teaches an important life lesson. It encourages renewal, cleanliness, and harmony with nature. When people follow eco-friendly practices and understand the meaning behind the ritual, they preserve the true spirit of the festival.

Ultimately, Bhogi Mantalu reminds everyone that real celebration lies in discarding the old, embracing the new, and moving forward with positive intentions.
