Chennai: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a cyclone alert as a severe cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal is set to trigger heavy rainfall across Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, and Karaikal. Coastal districts will face intense rain, strong winds, and rough sea conditions over the next few days.
The weather office said a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Indian Ocean intensified into a severe cyclonic circulation on January 6. The system is moving west-northwestwards and is likely to strengthen further. As a result, rainfall activity will increase across coastal and delta regions.
Rainfall Intensity to Increase From January 8
On January 7, coastal Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry may receive light rainfall. Interior districts will mostly see dry weather during the day. However, rain intensity will rise sharply from January 8.
Very heavy rainfall is likely in Mylapore, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, and Pudukkottai districts on January 8 and 9. Heavy rain will also affect Cuddalore, Villupuram, and Chengalpattu during this period.
On January 10, weather conditions may worsen further. Very heavy rainfall is likely in Cuddalore, Villupuram, and Chengalpattu districts. Heavy rain is also expected in Chennai, Kanchipuram, and Tiruvannamalai. Authorities have warned of possible waterlogging and traffic disruptions.
Strong Winds, Fishermen Asked to Stay Ashore
The cyclonic system will bring strong gusty winds along the Tamil Nadu coast, the Gulf of Mannar, and Comorin areas. Wind speeds may range between 35 and 50 kmph. Gusts may reach up to 60 kmph until January 10.
Officials have issued strict instructions to fishermen not to venture into the sea. Rough sea conditions are likely to prevail during this period. Coastal residents have been advised to remain alert and follow official advisories.
The RMC has issued a yellow alert for several districts, including Chennai. The alert urges people to take precautionary measures.
Chennai Weather Forecast
On January 7, Chennai will witness partly cloudy skies. The maximum temperature will remain around 29 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature will range between 23 and 24 degrees Celsius. Officials expect rainfall activity to gradually reduce from January 11.
Residents in low-lying and coastal areas should stay cautious as the cyclonic circulation continues to influence weather conditions across the state.
