A powerful car explosion near Delhi’s historic Red Fort on Monday evening has left at least 9 people dead and 22 others injured, prompting a nationwide security alert. Authorities in Mumbai, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan have heightened security at key locations following the blast.
Security beefed up in Mumbai and Uttar Pradesh
Sources in central security agencies informed the media that security measures have been intensified across Mumbai, particularly at transport hubs, markets, and public gatherings. Police patrols have been increased in sensitive zones of the city as a precautionary measure. The UP officials issued a high alert to all districts. Officials in Lucknow ordered extensive patrols and vehicle checks in crowded and vulnerable areas. Additional forces have been deployed near the Indo-Nepal border, where both the Border Security Force (BSF) and intelligence units are monitoring cross-border movements.
Rajasthan police issue statewide alert
In Rajasthan, Director General of Police Rajiv Sharma instructed all range Inspector Generals, district superintendents, and officers at sensitive police stations to remain vigilant. Officials are screening incoming vehicles at interstate border checkpoints, and they have strengthened security in districts adjoining other states.
What happened at Delhi’s Red Fort?
According to Delhi Police Commissioner, the explosion occurred at approximately 6:52 pm in a slow-moving vehicle near the Red Fort traffic signal. The occupants were reportedly inside when the blast took place. Deputy Chief Fire Officer AK Malik said firefighters received the alert shortly after the explosion and quickly brought the blaze under control by 7:29 pm.
The blast caused extensive damage, destroying 22 nearby vehicles. Emergency teams rushed the injured to Lok Nayak Hospital, where doctors confirmed multiple fatalities. Eyewitnesses described hearing a ‘very loud explosion’ followed by a ‘huge fireball’ that engulfed the area.
The Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) and Delhi Police Special Cell have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion and identify those responsible. Forensic experts are examining debris from the site, and investigators are reviewing security footage from nearby cameras.
Meanwhile, 20 fire engines and disaster response teams remain stationed at the scene to prevent further hazards.
