Israel has announced that US President Donald Trump will receive the country’s highest civilian honour, marking a historic first in Israel’s history. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made the announcement after a bilateral meeting with Trump at Mar-a-Lago, Florida, on Monday.
First Foreigner to Receive the Prestigious Award
Notably, this is the first time in 80 years that Israel will confer its top civilian honour on a non-Israeli citizen. Moreover, it is the first time the award will be presented under the peace category. The Israeli government recently amended its rules in July to allow foreigners to receive the honour.
Israel Prize for Peace for Services to Jewish People
According to Netanyahu, Trump will receive the Israel Prize for Peace in recognition of his contributions to the Jewish community and the security of Israel. Furthermore, Trump is expected to formally receive the award during Israel’s Independence Day celebrations.
“President Trump has broken many traditions and surprised the world. Therefore, we have also decided to break tradition by honouring a non-Israeli for the first time,” Netanyahu said. He added that the award recognises Trump’s efforts in strengthening Israel’s security and global standing.
Trump Says He Is Honoured
Responding to the announcement, Trump said he was surprised and deeply honoured by Israel’s decision. He also expressed happiness over the recognition, calling it a significant moment in his public life.
Talks on Gaza and West Bank
Meanwhile, the meeting between the two leaders focused on key regional issues. They held detailed discussions on the second phase of the Gaza peace agreement and the West Bank situation. Although differences remain over the West Bank issue, Trump stated that Israel remains committed to the peace process and described the country as strong and resilient.
Netanyahu, on his part, said the talks were productive and expressed confidence that continued dialogue would help address outstanding challenges.
